A new children’s clothes store selling some of fashion’s most popular brands is opening on Derby’s Sadlergate.
Tom Browns marks a move away from traditional children’s clothes brands to concentrate on modern lifestyle fashion.
It also provides a timely boost to Derby’s Cathedral Quarter, and Sadlergate in particular, as it continues its renaissance for shopping.
The inspiration behind the shop is the Thomas Hughes novel Tom Brown’s schooldays, which follows its protagonist through a journey of discovery as he develops as a boy.
Tom Browns is the brainchild of Nigel Sutherland, the managing director of Brigdens, who said he intends to provide customers with a modern, yet traditional shopping experience.
He is currently developing a specialist area within the store for children’s shoes.
He said: “There has been a move away from traditional children’s brands to brands that adults recognise and want for their children, such as Gant and Ralph Lauren.
“More and more children are recognising brands and making their own lifestyle choices in regards to what they wear.
“Tom Browns reflects that but also reflects the ethos of the novel, about traditional family values and idealism.”
