Signal Refurbishment Scheme at Pentagon Island

23/08/2021

Derby City Council  have announced the commencement of the Pentagon Island phase of the Transforming Cities project.

The work is expected to start on Wednesday 25th August 2021 and consists of the following….

  • The existing signals are being replaced entirely with a system that will facilitate bus priority operation and the new signal lights will be low voltage LED.
  • All of the pedestrian/cycle crossing points are being reconstructed. The ongoing improvements to the cycling infrastructure, and particularly the new off-road path along Chequers Road will also benefit from the refurbished crossings.

In place will be a sophisticated temporary traffic signal arrangement that will allow the existing signals to be taken off line at an early stage. These temporary signals will emulate the existing signals to minimise disruption to traffic. Lane closures will also be required but will only be allowed during off-peak hours 9.30 – 15.30. In addition there will be occasional night working between 20.00 – 06.00.

On dates yet to be determined there will need to be night time closures of the A52 eastbound exit off of the roundabout with a diversion along Nottingham Road.

It is anticipated that the scheme as a whole will take around 20 weeks to complete though it is intended to have the new signals operational before Christmas.
