The Game Jam Showcase at QUAD is a digital interactive project featuring in Phase 1 three existing artworks, and in Phase 2 three newly commissioned artworks by Nuka Nayu (奈柔), Kinnari Saraiya and Seema Mattu. Working with recent QUAD exhibiting artist Danielle Brathwaite-Shirley, the Game Jam was a weekend of intensive making involving people of colour to develop digital video-game inspired artworks.
For QUAD’s Season of Play in late July we present in the Showcase existing works by the three artists. In mid-August the Showcase changes to present new commissions that will coincide with the exhibition Time Travel Across Many-Worlds, curated by Kinnari Saraiya for BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, Gateshead. In both exhibitions multiple artists reference each other’s sense of worldbuilding with the works at QUAD focusing on the end of colonial legacy. The Game Jam works are presented in a reworked wooden and brass apparatus called बायोस्कोप, a 19th century tool used to educate South Africans and Indians into the benefits of Empire. The digital works inside the Showcase are steeped in Asian cosmologies, dance and movement rituals that visitors can play using access-friendly controls.
