Profile

Speaker: Mr Michael Lord CEng MInstP, STEP Fuel Cycle Lead, UK Atomic Energy Authority

This talk will cover fusion technology basics and an introduction to the UK’s prototype fusion energy plant, STEP (Spherical Tokamak for Energy Programme) which will be built at West Burton in Nottinghamshire.

STEP is an ambitious programme which aims to demonstrate net electricity from fusion and will pave the way for the potential development of a fleet of future fusion plants around the world. This presents a fantastic opportunity for the East Midlands.

The talk will summarise the STEP concept design, provide insight into what it is like to work on the programme and discuss some of the technical challenges being overcome by the STEP fuel cycle team, specifically fuelling and exhausting.

Doors open at the venue at 18:30 with the talk beginning at 19:00. Please enter the Museum of Making via the Lombe Door.

There will be a bar available for the purchase of refreshments.

Whilst it isn’t necessary to register for this event, it will help with our rooming and refreshment arrangements if you do.
