Derby Soap Opera
10/02/2012 - 29/06/2012
QUAD Come and be part of one of the World’s largest and most ambitious film projects: the Derby Soap Opera!
WE NEED YOU! Star in your own film! Write the script, create the set, design the costumes, create the soundtrack, light the film, be an actor, a singer or a dancer in Derby’s most ambitious mass participation project to date – the Derby Soap Opera.
Ground breaking film maker and artist Marinella Senatore will be QUAD’s Artist in Residence from February to June 2012, leading you on a creative journey with the aim of involving every single person in the city of Derby. There will be the chance for individuals and groups to take part in film making workshops and learn key skills including directing, set design, acting, sound recording, camera work and all other elements of the film making process.
Building on QUAD’s history of innovative mass participation projects, Senatore will work with the residents of Derby to create the script for a performance based musical drama, highlighting the thoughts, feelings and current happiness and well being of the people in the city.
We need every single person in Derby, every student, every school, every bingo player, dentist, bus driver, grandparent, councilor, professor, brick layer, plumber, mum and dad to get involved! Your issues, your lives and your thoughts will become the script. You and your skills will provide the set. Marinella will be the Director and QUAD will be your support.
Sections of the film will be screened at QUAD; the full film will be screened outdoors during Derby Festé in September 2012.

The Future is Unwritten: Way out West
17/02/2012 - 17/02/2012
Guildhall Theatre Two men walk into a pub - and then it stops being normal.
Pints are drunk; conversation spans the creation of the universe, the meaning of happiness, the chemical construction of pork scratchings – and how they seem to know more about each other than complete strangers could, or should. And they both seem to recollect dreams in which they met Laurel and Hardy, and each other.
As the alcohol kicks in Simon and Peter find themselves lurching towards an unnerving philosophical and spiritual world, where it becomes a distinct possibility that they are Laurel and Hardy reincarnated... but that’s simply laughable, absurd and beyond comprehension – isn’t it?
A funny, tender, melancholic and puzzling play.
Guidhall Theatre 7.30pm £12, concessions £10

Reform Theatre: My Favourite Summer
16/02/2012 - 16/02/2012
Guildhall Theatre Every once in a while a play comes along that reminds you of the glorious summers of your twenties. The long hot days, that fantastic trip abroad with your mates, the moment when the girl you’ve fancied for years suddenly realises she feels the same way, and you live happily ever after.
This is not that play.
Guildhall Theatre 7.30pm £12, concessions £10
Join Dave as he spends a month working alongside a nutcase called Melvin in the summer job from hell whilst trying to save money to take the girl he loves away on holiday with him before she disappears out of his life forever. Still, at least the weather’s nice for him.
A comedy for everyone who’s ever been in love... and lived to tell the tale.
“Blissfully funny” Daily Telegraph

Big Pants and Botox
18/02/2012 - 18/02/2012
Guildhall Theatre Rebecca Wheatley gives a tour-de-force performance as we’re taken on the emotional rollercoaster that is Barbra’s 50th birthday celebration. Roche’s trademark blend of humour and poignancy cannot fail to engage as Barbra gradually reveals her big secret.
Part of the play was inspired by a true story Louise discovered whilst researching a TV documentary twenty years ago – the material was never used but has lingered in her imagination ever since. Big Pants and Botox gave her the perfect opportunity to tell it at last.
The story she has woven, and the character she has created are by turns hilarious and intriguing and ultimately uplifting.
Guildhall Theatre 7.30pm £15, concessions £13

Assembly Rooms Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band fans will be delighted to learn that Roger Ruskin Spear, Rodney Slater and Sam Spoons have teamed up with super-pianist Dave Glasson to create more fun, music and subversive diversion in the spirit of the ageless band.
Three Bonzos and a Piano unleash their Bonzo Dog classics with energetic zip and palaver. Jollity Farm, I’m Bored, Big Shot, Monster Mash and many more feature in this fantastic show.
Robots, smoke, unsuitable medical technology, ancient theatrical props, the kitchen sink and the audience all combine to re-create the atmosphere of those formative years of the Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band. Addictive stuff.

The Adventures of Andy Kershaw

A born rebel and a maverick, he’s combined his passion for music with a lunatic curiosity and an instinct for frontline journalism, reporting from the world’s most extreme countries.
Andy is among the UK’s most-decorated broadcasters, working for Radio 4 and as a Radio 1 DJ, sharing an office with John Peel. More recently a presenter on Radio 3, he has also worked for the Rolling Stones. His record collection weighs seven tons.
Whether it applies to foreign adventures, motorcycles, nervous breakdowns or relationships with a piece of music, Andy has always lived by his most reliable maxim: if you’re going to have one, have a big one.

professional gig, a rabble-rousing rendition and recording with Chuck Brown, and culminating in her tragic death.
Sarah Jane Buckley (Hollyoaks) stars as Eva Cassidy, whilst Maureen Nolan (Blood Brothers) takes on the role of Eva’s mother, and Rob Mcveigh (BBC’s Any Dream Will Do) stars as Eva’s brother.

TCHAIKOVSKY Polonaise from Eugene Onegin Shostakovich Violin Concerto No.1 TCHAIKOVSKY Symphony No.4
Tchaikovsky’s most popular opera, Eugene Onegin, and his angst-ridden 4th Symphony were written virtually back-to-back at around the same time as the most devastating emotional crisis of his life, which came to a head in his short-lived and disastrous marriage. In the symphony he wrestles with the fate he felt haunting him.
Shostakovich’s Violin Concerto No.1 was written for the great Russian violinist David Oistrakh. Conceived on a large scale, it is typical of the composer in its mixture of brooding introspection and driving energy.
