Events In the Cathedral Quarter

Throughout the year you will find a multitude of events and entertainment within the Cathedral Quarter, creating a fun and friendly atmosphere for all the family.

Throughout May to September, on the second Saturday of each month, the Cathedral Quarter hosts the CQ Street Circus, a fascinating display of circus and theatre acts which will leave you mesmerised.

Every third Saturday in the month, Knickerbocker Glorious takes place on the Market Place. A combination of music, comedy and performing arts is sure to keep you entertained whilst the Arts and Craft Fayre is the perfect place to find that something special.

And there’s more! The Cathedral Quarter also plays host to the Furthest From the Sea Festival, Derby Feste, Derby Beer Festival, the Farmer’s and Vintage Arts and Food Markets and the Derby Christmas Ice Rink.

If you are interested in finding out more about the Cathedral Quarter’s long and fascinating history, why not join renowned historian Richard Felix on an insightful tour of the area? There are two tours to choose from – CQ Lunchtime Walks every Thursday at 12 noon and Towers, Tunnels and Tales on the first Saturday of each month.

Derby College Starts Search For Apprentice Verger
Derby College has launched a unique recruitment drive to find an Apprentice Verger to work at Derby Cathedral.
The young person will complete customer service qualifications with the College as well as the Church of England Guild of Vergers diploma alongside paid work at £151.60 a week plus additional bonuses for evening and weekend work.
The diverse job on offer includes liaising with the thousands of visitors to the Cathedral, supporting with the security and upkeep of the building and setting up and taking part in services and events including operating PA and lighting equipment.
Derby Cathedral Assistant Curate Revd Andy Trenier explained: “Derby Cathedral is a fast paced, and exciting place to work.
“We are open for the whole community 365 days a year and the Apprentice Verger will be an important part of the team welcoming one and all to the Cathedral for a wide variety of purposes.
“We have also received funding from Arts Council England and the First World War Centenary Cathedral Repairs Fund which have given us the equipment and opportunities to increase our capacity and potential as a performance and events venue.
“The Apprentice Verger will therefore greatly enhance the capacity of the team here to deliver these events.

“They also need to be comfortable working with the widest cross section of the public and in a religious environment.
“We already have two apprentices amongst our 30 staff who work across several business areas and charities and they continue to contribute greatly to the organisation so we know that this structured learning and employment programme works.
“We are delighted to be working with Derby College who will handle the recruitment and training of this position and I hope that young people will recognise that this is a fantastic opportunity to learn some valuable skills in a dynamic and supportive environment.”
Derby College Business Development Director April Hayhurst said: “This is a unique opportunity for a special person to work at the heart of one the regions’ best known institutions.
“It is definitely one of the more unusual apprenticeship roles that we have worked on but I am confident that we will be able to find the right candidate for the Cathedral and support the young person onto the first rung of what will be a fascinating career ladder.
“The diverse skills and experience that the successful candidate gains will open many doors for them in a wide range of future careers.”

The deadline for applications is 15 January. Tommaso Starace's "Italian Short Stories" The Photos of Gianni Berengo Gardin Presented by Derby Jazz in conjunction with FORMAT 15

Déda

SATURDAY 4 APRIL

Tommaso Starace's "Italian Short Stories" The Photos of Gianni Berengo Gardin

Presented by Derby Jazz in conjunction with FORMAT 15

Ten years ago, Italian saxophonist Tommaso Starace – an aficionado of black and white photographs – explored the iconic photos of Magnum Photographer Elliott Erwitt. Now he explores the world of one of the most celebrated Italian photographers, Gianni Berengo Gardin.

Gardin has published more than 210 books and has taken pictures in Italy from the 40s to today. Starace has chosen 14 images from this vast portfolio, images that tell a story which, when accompanied by the Quartet's music, create an atmosphere of 'cinematic jazz'.

The photos – taken in Palermo, Milan, Venice, Genoa, Siena and Florence – will be projected onto a screen during the performance.
