Apprentice Verger
18/12/2014 - 01/05/2015
Derby Cathedral

Derby College Press Release

16.12.14 dc11171verger
Derby College Starts Search For Apprentice Verger
Derby College has launched a unique recruitment drive to find an Apprentice Verger to work at Derby Cathedral.
The young person will complete customer service qualifications with the College as well as the Church of England Guild of Vergers diploma alongside paid work at £151.60 a week plus additional bonuses for evening and weekend work.
The diverse job on offer includes liaising with the thousands of visitors to the Cathedral, supporting with the security and upkeep of the building and setting up and taking part in services and events including operating PA and lighting equipment.
Derby Cathedral Assistant Curate Revd Andy Trenier explained: “Derby Cathedral is a fast paced, and exciting place to work.
“We are open for the whole community 365 days a year and the Apprentice Verger will be an important part of the team welcoming one and all to the Cathedral for a wide variety of purposes.
“We have also received funding from Arts Council England and the First World War Centenary Cathedral Repairs Fund which have given us the equipment and opportunities to increase our capacity and potential as a performance and events venue.
“The Apprentice Verger will therefore greatly enhance the capacity of the team here to deliver these events.
“We are looking for someone with an appetite to learn, to remain positive and cheerful even under pressure, be strong team player and have naturally good interpersonal skills.
“They also need to be comfortable working with the widest cross section of the public and in a religious environment.
“We already have two apprentices amongst our 30 staff who work across several business areas and charities and they continue to contribute greatly to the organisation so we know that this structured learning and employment programme works.
“We are delighted to be working with Derby College who will handle the recruitment and training of this position and I hope that young people will recognise that this is a fantastic opportunity to learn some valuable skills in a dynamic and supportive environment.”
Derby College Business Development Director April Hayhurst said: “This is a unique opportunity for a special person to work at the heart of one the regions’ best known institutions.
“It is definitely one of the more unusual apprenticeship roles that we have worked on but I am confident that we will be able to find the right candidate for the Cathedral and support the young person onto the first rung of what will be a fascinating career ladder.
“The diverse skills and experience that the successful candidate gains will open many doors for them in a wide range of future careers.”

The deadline for applications is 15 January. For more information about this and all the apprenticeship opportunities available through Derby College, please contact The Apprenticeship Team amy.frankland@derby-college.ac.uk or visit http://www.derby-college.ac.uk/index.php/apprenticeships.html and click the link to current vacancies.

Unforgettable
20/05/2015 - 23/05/2015
Derby Live

It's the most unexpected things that rekindle the unique bond between brother and sister. An ageing parent is one. Alzheimer's is another. But 'Life is too short'. There's new places to go and new people to meet. And new discoveries to be made - not least between brother and sister and their family experiences, past present and future.

Home is where your parents are. No matter where you fly – that ‘homing instinct’ applies. Rosie and Jed are both in their sixties.
A lot of water has flowed under the bridge since they shared bunk beds as children. And squabbled. And competed for Mum and Dad’s attention. Jed was Rosie’s ‘Best Man’ at her wedding – and her soul mate when she divorced. And now fate finds them back at home together once again. The thing about sibling rivalry and unity is that it knows no time restraints. Brothers and sisters might grow older – but they seldom grow up.

New Perspectives return with the winning entry of their 2014 Long Play competition directed by Theresa Keogh. We invite you to share Jed and Rosie's revelations in Tim Elgood's funny and poignant play about growing up, growing old and a lifetime of rediscovery.
