Derby Soap Opera
10/02/2012 - 29/06/2012
QUAD Come and be part of one of the World’s largest and most ambitious film projects: the Derby Soap Opera!
WE NEED YOU! Star in your own film! Write the script, create the set, design the costumes, create the soundtrack, light the film, be an actor, a singer or a dancer in Derby’s most ambitious mass participation project to date – the Derby Soap Opera.
Ground breaking film maker and artist Marinella Senatore will be QUAD’s Artist in Residence from February to June 2012, leading you on a creative journey with the aim of involving every single person in the city of Derby. There will be the chance for individuals and groups to take part in film making workshops and learn key skills including directing, set design, acting, sound recording, camera work and all other elements of the film making process.
Building on QUAD’s history of innovative mass participation projects, Senatore will work with the residents of Derby to create the script for a performance based musical drama, highlighting the thoughts, feelings and current happiness and well being of the people in the city.
We need every single person in Derby, every student, every school, every bingo player, dentist, bus driver, grandparent, councilor, professor, brick layer, plumber, mum and dad to get involved! Your issues, your lives and your thoughts will become the script. You and your skills will provide the set. Marinella will be the Director and QUAD will be your support.
Sections of the film will be screened at QUAD; the full film will be screened outdoors during Derby Festé in September 2012.

‘A Man Comes Into the Room with a Gun …’ Crime Writing Workshop with Zoë Sharp
19/05/2012 - 19/05/2012
Derby Central Library10am to 3.45pm Central Library, The Wardwick, Derby DE1 1HS £25, booking essential. One day creative writing workshop for adults Raymond Chandler’s most famous piece of advice to writers of crime novels was, “When in doubt, have a man come through the door with a gun in his hand.” Great in principle, not so easy in practice. So, how do you create and maintain nail-biting suspense in your writing? Writing a good crime thriller is tough, and most work will be judged on the quality of its opening – the first line, the prologue or opening chapter, the initial scenario. We’ll be looking at techniques to hit the ground running and ensure your readers will keep turning the pages, by torchlight if necessary, until they reach the breathless conclusion.
Zoë Sharp wrote her first novel at fifteen and created her no-nonsense bodyguard heroine, Charlie Fox, after receiving death-threat letters as a photojournalist. She has published nine novels and her work has been optioned for TV. www.ZoeSharp.com, Cost: £25, including tea and coffee throughout the day, booking essential. Book at any Derby city library, for more information telephone 01332 641701 or email central.library@derby.gov.uk

The Derby Lectures: Mines, Mills and Machines
31/05/2012 - 31/05/2012
Derby Local Studies Library Join Che Binder as he explores the Enlightenment in Derby and Derbyshire.
The birth of the scientific method and early emphasis on its application to industry led to the world’s first factories and other wonders such as the purpose-built technological marvel that was Strutt’s General Infirmary in Derby. Philosophers, scientists and industrialists travelled from all over England and Europe to view these achievements in order that they might emulate them at home.
Charles Cotton ‘Wonders of the Peak’ and Defoe’s work also encouraged people at this time to begin to view the natural landscape as a spectacle in its own right, rather than as a resource to be exploited.
Learn about the voyages of discovery taking place in eighteenth century Derby and the along the Derwent. Count the world firsts as they stack up and find out more about the men who laid the foundations of the modern world.
Venue : Derby Local Studies Library Cost : £6 Date/Time : Thursday 31 May, 7.30pm – 9pm
