Derby Cathedral Peregrines
11/05/2013 - 13/05/2013
Derby Cathedral Peregrine Project
We expect the four eggs which are now being incubated by the peregrine falcons in their nest tray high on the East side of the cathedral tower to hatch out between 11-13 May. We now have four web cameras in place (two with streaming view plus audio) so you can watch the chicks emerge and get their first feed - or see a video clip on the project blog if you missed it! Just put 'derby peregrines' into any search engine and you'll get to the lively project blog from which a tab takes you to the web cams which run 24/7. The peregrine project is a partnership between Derbyshire Wildlife Trust, Derby Cathedral, Cathedral Quarter and the city council, which hosts the web cams. A monitor set up in the window of the cathedral centre cafe on Irongate now shows the live stream to passersby - be sure to take a look!

Family History Plus : Your Poor Ancestors!
14/05/2013 - 14/05/2013
Derby Local Studies Library
1.30-4.30pm, Derby Local Studies Library, 25B Irongate, Derby DE1 3GL You’re interested in researching your family history, but rather than putting names on a family tree you want to know more about the world they lived in. Perhaps you have discovered ancestors who were in the Workhouse? Do you want to find out more about what this meant for them? Then this three-hour workshop is for you! Join our family and local history expert for a hands-on workshop and discover more about the harsh realities of eighteenth and nineteenth century poverty. What was life like for the poor? What were the attitudes of the establishment? What measures were in place to help them? The session begins with a fascinating illustrated talk, exploring the treatment of the poor in Britain and what life would have been like. After a break for refreshments you will learn what records are available nationally and locally, how to locate them and interpret them. You will look at case studies from Derby, using original documents from settlement orders to workhouse registers. The knowledge you gain can be applied to your own family tree research. Cost = £12. Early booking is advised. Please contact Derby Local Studies Library on 01332 642240 or email localstudies.library@derby.gov.uk
