Derby College Starts Search For Apprentice Verger
Derby College has launched a unique recruitment drive to find an Apprentice Verger to work at Derby Cathedral.
The young person will complete customer service qualifications with the College as well as the Church of England Guild of Vergers diploma alongside paid work at £151.60 a week plus additional bonuses for evening and weekend work.
The diverse job on offer includes liaising with the thousands of visitors to the Cathedral, supporting with the security and upkeep of the building and setting up and taking part in services and events including operating PA and lighting equipment.
Derby Cathedral Assistant Curate Revd Andy Trenier explained: “Derby Cathedral is a fast paced, and exciting place to work.
“We are open for the whole community 365 days a year and the Apprentice Verger will be an important part of the team welcoming one and all to the Cathedral for a wide variety of purposes.
“We have also received funding from Arts Council England and the First World War Centenary Cathedral Repairs Fund which have given us the equipment and opportunities to increase our capacity and potential as a performance and events venue.
“The Apprentice Verger wil ltherefore greatly enhance the capacity of the team here to deliver these events.
“We are looking for someone with an appetite to learn, to remain positive and cheerful even under pressure,be strong team player and have naturally good interpersonal skills.
“They also need to be comfortable working with the widest cross section of the public and in a religious environment.
“We already have two apprentices amongst our 30 staff who work across several business areas and charities and they continue to contribute greatly to the organisation so we know that this structured learning and employment programme works.
“We are delighted to be working with Derby College who will handle the recruitment and training of this position and I hope that young people will recognise that this is a fantastic opportunity to learn some valuable skills in a dynamic and supportive environment.”
