  • CQ BID and Business News E-bulletin                                                                     Issue 372 April 2017           Your weekly news & updates      Great British High Street Google Digital Garage Workshop - Thursday 11 May 8-10am As part of the prize for Cathedral Quarter BID winning the 'Best City Location' at the Great British High Street awards, you are invited to attend a Google Digital Garage digital skills training workshop aimed at assisting you in growing your business, career and confidence online. This will take place at QUAD on Thursday 11 May 8am -10am.   The workshop is run by Google digital experts with first-hand knowledge of what is required to gain a competitive advantage in the ever changing digital landscape. The workshop will cover two main areas; 'Tell Your Story Online' and 'Reach New Customers Online'.   The programme has received strong endorsements since its inception in 2015 with 95% of attendees reporting that the training was ‘very’ or ‘extremely’ useful and 88% reporting that they have made changes to the way they do business subsequent to the sessions.    This event is FREE to attend but booking is essential. Derby was voted the 26th out of 373 locations, scoring highly on worker density, total workers, public transport access and catering provision.     Other important news for businesses     St George's Day event - Saturday 22 April Derby City Council have announced its program of events for the St George's Day celebrations due to take place on Saturday 22 April. Up to 10,000 people are expected to attend the celebrations with free events on the Market Place to include morris dancing, maypole dancing, theatre performances, a ceilidh, arts and craft fair, longbow archery and medieval combat demonstrations. There will also be a parade through the city centre, setting off from The Spot at 11.30am and winding its way through the centre to the Market Place waterfall at approximately 12pm.     Last chance to catch FORMAT International Photography Festival The FORMAT International Photography Festival comes to a close on Sunday 23 April with this week your final opportunity to visit and for businesses to capitilise on the additional footfall generated.  The 2017 edition of FORMAT has explored the theme of HABITAT and as well as exhibitions showcasing the best of contemporary international photography, the  programme includes workshops, talks, tours, and film screenings. The majority of the funding has been secured through the D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership with the project being delivered in six phases between this year and the end of 2019 as part of the City Centre Masterplan. Improvements are planned to the public realm and environment on St Peters Street, Albion Street, Exchange Street and Osnabruck Square whilst cycle connections between the city centre and the area around the Silk Mill will also be improved.     Future High Streets - Resources for Independent retailers At the Future High Street Conference 2017 held at the end of last month, some further resources for independent retailers were highlighted which may be of use to Cathedral Quarter businesses. At Retailchampion.co.uk retailers can sign up for 52 free weekly tips as well as other paid-for supporrt; Independentshops.co.uk is a FREE online retail directory for independent shops as well as a source of information and tips.    Other important news for businesses     CQ Saturdays Knickerbocker Glorious returns! Saturday 15 April sees the return of the CQ Saturdays Knickerbocker Glorious events to the Waterfall on the Market Place from 11am - 3pm.    The event is free to attend, with many new acts providing an eclectic mix of family-friendly entertainment including live music, performing arts, comedy and much, much more.   CQ Saturdays Knickerbocker Glorious will again be a regular event this year, taking place on the third Saturday of each month. Please r.s.v.p to Ashley Lewis, BID Project Manager on 01332 419053 or via email.     Poppy sculptures to return to the Cathedral Quarter in 2017 The 'Weeping Window' by artist Paul Cummins and designer Tom Piper will be returning to Derby as part of 14-18 NOW’s UK-wide tour of the iconic poppies with an installation  at The Silk Mill from 9 June - 23 July 2017. The presentation will give people the chance to experience the impact of the ceramic poppy sculptures following their much-publicised installation at the Tower of London in 2014. The tone of the event is one of 'sombre reflection' and it is expected that between 200,000 and 500,000 visitors will visit the Silk Mill Museum to view the poppy installation. There are a number of ways businesses can get involved, including the provision of in-kind services such as provision of buffets,       Other important news for businesses     2Q Festival - Saturday 1 April The popular 2Q Festival returns to the city on 1 April with live music taking place at centrally located venues including the Guildhall Theatre, The Old Bell, The Blue Note, Blessington Carriage, Ye Olde Dolphin Inn, The Silk Mill Museum and Vines in the Cathedral Quarter. The festival features an eclectic mix of big name headliners and emerging talent from the music scene. Over 1,250 tickets were sold in 2016 and with an increased line up and new venues added for this year the Festival has become a key date in Derby's events calendar.     EDL March scheduled 8 April now cancelled The BID office has received a number of enquiries expressing concern over the proposed march planned by the English Defence League which was scheduled for 8 April in the city.
