  • Organisers of a new programme of monthly outdoor family entertainment in the Cathedral Quarter are inviting local artists to audition for future events. The Cathedral Quarter Business Improvement District (BID) has teamed up with Derby-based arts promoters Furthest From the Sea to organise the monthly arts event to attract more people into the area and showcase local talent. The first ‘CQ Saturdays presents - Knickerbocker Glorious’ was held in the Market Place on Saturday (May 18) with the next event planned for Saturday June 15 and then as part of a day-long arts extravaganza ‘Furthest From the Sea’ in the Market Place on June 29. Further events are then planned on Saturdays throughout the summer. In the meantime, organisers are welcoming applications for auditions from local performers who are keen to get involved and raise their stage profiles. Films or snippets of work with a brief summary of the act should be emailed to info@furthestfromthesea.co.uk  and auditions will be held in the coming weeks. Musician and arts promoter Matt McGuinness is from Furthest From the Sea – so called because of Derby’s land-locked location. He said: “The first CQ Saturdays Presents..Knickerbocker Glorious was a huge success with sizeable crowds who enjoyed a wealth of entertainment including music, poetry, street theatre and comedy. “As well as encouraging more people into the Cathedral Quarter, we are keen to showcase the diverse talents of local performers and we hope that this opportunity will be a springboard for many up and coming young artists." Paul Hurst, vice chair of the Cathedral Quarter management group, which drives forward activities under the area’s Business Improvement District Status, added: “The CQ Saturdays programme is part of the BID objective to provide a great lifestyle experience for visitors and people working in the area to enjoy and to create a platform for businesses to promote themselves and attract new customers. “Knickerbocker Glorious is the first stage of a wide range of weekend events over the summer under the ‘CQ Saturdays presents’ banner which will give people another reason to come to the Cathedral Quarter and create opportunities for businesses to get involved through special promotions and their own events. “We were delighted with the success of the first event and hope that this will be a wonderful showcase for emerging artists in the coming months.” For more information about the monthly ‘CQ Saturdays presents’ events in the Cathedral Quarter, visit www.derbycathedralquarter.co.uk, follow us on twitter @DerbyCQ  #CQGLorious and ‘like’ the official facebook page CathedralQuarterDerby Ends Media enquiries: Sarah Jenkin-Jones, JJPR, Tel: 01332 515102/07951 945665; sarah

  • CQ BID and Business News E-bulletin Issue No 143 May 2013   Old Bell Hotel    One of Derby's oldest buildings is being brought back into use.The Old Bell Hotel, on Sadler Gate, was built in 1650, is undergoing a £1m refurbishment by new owner Paul Hurst, who owns nearby Sadlergates.   He plans to open the tea rooms in the coming weeks followed by the function rooms and the restored Tudor bar. Future plans include opening a boutique hotel in the grade II listed building.     Paul said: "I walked past The Old Bell every day and I could see the state it was in. I became aware nothing was happening with it. You can't just let it go to wrack and ruin. We have done too much of that to our buildings in Derby. This building is so important to Sadler Gate and the Cathedral Quarter. The Tudor bar has been closed for years and we are recreating it exactly as it was," he said. "We also hope to uncover the glass domes in the ballroom, which have been boxed in."   Magistrates Court Plans    A planning application for a £3m proposal to turn the former Magistrates' Court into office space, meeting rooms and a cafe, have been submitted by developer Wilson Bowden to Derby City Council for approval.   The project, which will receive Regeneration Fund support, will create 27,000 sq. ft. of office space and will sit alongside a new hotel development which will be submitted as a seperate application.A decision on the development is due from the planning committee on June 11th.   New Business Support     Your Good Health, specialism in natural health products, has been set up in the Market Hall by David Pearson who has worked in the industry for nearly 40 years but found himself jobless after being made redundant last year.   The business has been supported by Erewash Partnership through the New Enterprise Allowance programme and by Derby City Council as part of the Be Your Own Boss scheme to attract new businesses into the Market Hall.   He said: "The Market Hall is a wonderful environment and everyone is very supportive. I had looked at high street premises but they were way out of my price range so starting here is the best option for me as a start-up business."   Love Your Market The Market Hall is hosting a craft and food fair on Saturday May 25 as part of Derby Markets' Love Your Local Markets campaign.   The event will include local people selling handmade goods from 10am to 3pm. The event has attracted crowds of over 1,000 people in previous years.   The Ey up mi duck race and riverside festival is a great day for the family and welcomes a variety of stalls including a bungee run, bouncy castle, games, food and drink. There will also be fairground rides. If you want to sponsor a duck, hold a stall on the day or buy raffle tickets please contact fundraising@sightsupportderbyshire.org.uk.   Diary Dates   Forthcoming events in the Cathedral Quarter include:   Every Monday 12 noon - Lunchtime walk with Richard Felix (Starting Point Outside Derby Cathedral)    Every Thursday, 12 noon and 1.30pm: Cook Stop demonstrations by local chefs in the Market Hall.
