Derby Jazz kicks off another season of the hottest jazz around in the CUBE café|bar. Pete Wareham of Acoustic Ladyland and Matthew Bourne have teamed up as a brilliant new duo playing beautifully dark and exciting tangos on saxophone and piano, blended together by atmospheric electronics and improvisation.
Named after Edmund Rivero, the Argentinean singer and tango legend who was known as ‘The Ugly Guy’, the name is certainly no description of the band!

After forming Company Chameleon in 2007, two of the North West’s most renowned contemporary dancers Anthony Missen and Kevin Edward Turner have been taking British dance by storm.
This double-bill by the duo includes the powerful and poignant Rites. An exploration of the universal experiences which shape men as friends, brothers, fathers and sons, Rites combines bold athleticism with moments of tenderness.
Before Night Fell is an exploration of male identity, camaraderie and bravery. Created in collaboration with Beth Cassani this is a dynamic and sensual work.

Phronesis

This dynamic trio is led by bassist Jasper Høiby and features Ivo Neame on piano and drummer Anton Eger.
Høiby’s full-bodied bass playing is rich in melody and dancey rhythms, inspired by
Mediterranean, Latin and East European folk music.
The three play together in perfect partnership, making a sumptuous sound which is a real pleasure for any jazz listener.

Argentine Tango is often regarded as the world’s most exquisite social dance. Come and experience the magic of a milonga (a tango dance party) with Déda’s tango tutors Njaal and Cidinha Bendixen.
The night starts with a lesson for beginners and improvers from 8pm, followed by a dance party with a mixture of traditional and electronic tango music.
Absolute beginners are welcome, with or without a partner.

An Anglo-German band, Paragon comprises four of the most exciting young talents currently working on the European jazz circuit. Led by Peter Ehwald on sax and clarinet and Arthur Lea on keyboards and tenor horn, Paragon charm audiences with their sheer passion and originality.

Bold, beautiful and charged dance theatre, driven by movement and compelling live music. Winner of the 2009 Scotsman Edinburgh Fringe First, Found has an elusive sense of narrative supported by text and film.
The threads of this narrative are drawn from a found letter. As this fractured story unfolds, one person’s reality is deeply affected by a life imagined.
Christine Devaney and Luke Sutherland previously worked together on award-winning show Venus as a Boy and created Found at Déda as former Associate Artists.

An amazing display of home-grown talent from Déda|Academy’s youth groups, featuring works created in collaboration with some of the finest regional and national choreographers.
Déda’s gifted and talented company Bounceback will be premiering their new work made with Déda’s Associate Choreographer Tom Dale. Also see InCompany and Pulse and their new pieces made with Déda|Artist Katie Green. In addition there will be guest performances by youth dance groups from across the East Midlands.
The Déda|Academy is a centre for excellence and engagement in dance for young people aged 11–19 years. This initiative is in partnership with Dance4 and Youth Dance England. Future Light is a Stage 1 event of U.Dance – the National Performance Framework managed by Youth Dance England.
